Peter Tompkins was appointed Downer Group Chief Executive Officer on 27 February 2023.
Previously, Peter held the position of Group Chief Operating Officer commencing June 2021.
He was formerly CEO and Managing Director of Spotless; a role he held since October 2018.
Peter joined Downer in 2008 and was appointed General Counsel in 2010. He is a highly valued member of Downer’s Executive Committee, which consists of the most senior executives from across the Group.
Peter has been a key member of Downer’s Tenders and Contracts Committee, which is central to Downer’s bid and risk management, and has been actively engaged in Downer’s Public Private Partnerships since 2008.
Peter has represented Downer on numerous Boards including Keolis Downer, Evolution Rail and Reliance Rail.
He has qualifications in law and commerce from Deakin University.
Michael joined Downer as Deputy Group Chief Financial Officer in May 2014. He was appointed Chief Financial Officer in October 2016.
Michael has held a range of senior finance positions in a career spanning 25 years. He was previously VP Finance for ASX listed explosives group Dyno Nobel and more recently held a number of portfolio CFO positions for a large private equity fund.
Michael trained as a Chartered Accountant with Ernst & Young.
Julie joined Downer in 2010 as General Manager Zero Harm for the former Works division’s Australian operations. In 2012 Julie was appointed to the role of Executive General Manager Zero Harm responsible for leading the function across Downer Infrastructure Australia. In 2013 the scope of this role broadened to include Downer Infrastructure’s international operations. In 2015, Julie was appointed Group Head of Zero Harm, responsible for Zero Harm across the Downer Group. In March 2021, Julie was appointed Group Head of Sustainability, responsible for guiding the Group's strategies, policies and reporting on sustainability.
Julie is a highly experienced health, safety, and environment professional and has led safety functions in various high risk industries. Her background includes law enforcement, rail, mining, heavy manufacture and transport.
She holds a Bachelor of Science in Safety as well as a Master of Engineering Science in Manufacturing Engineering and Management.
Robert Regan commenced as Group General Counsel and Company Secretary on 1 January 2019.
Prior to joining Downer, Robert held a range of senior positions in a legal career spanning more than 30 years, most recently in the role of Partner-In-Charge, Sydney for a leading Australian law firm.
He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) from the University of Sydney and is a Harvard Business School alumnus.
Robert has extensive Board and governance expertise across a range of industries.
Murray Robertson has been with Downer for 15 years. He joined the business as a Contract Engineer and has developed through the business, working across Transport, Utilities and Facilities. Prior to be appointed Downer New Zealand CEO, he was leading New Zealand’s Construction and FM business since July 2021, as Executive General Manager Facilities, which includes Downer Facilities Management, Hawkins, Spotless, AE Smith and Epicure.
Murray holds an NZCE (Civil), Diploma in Environmental Technology, Bachelor of Engineering and MBA from the University of Auckland. He’s a Chartered Professional Engineer, a Fellow of Engineering NZ and a Chartered Director. In Murray’s spare time, he enjoys adventure travel, sailing, skiing, and time at the beach with his family.
Murray sees Downer as a ‘team of teams’ and is passionate about the culture and high-performance that sets this business apart from the rest.
Pat was appointed to the role of Head of Facilities & Asset Services in June 2021, following the merger of Downer’s Asset Services business and Spotless.
Pat joined Downer in March 2016 and was previously Executive General Manager of Asset Services.
Prior to joining Downer, Pat held a number of executive positions with Thiess, Transfield Services, Billiton and BHP Steel.
Pat has over 30 years’ experience in operational and senior management roles across the facilities management, manufacturing, industrial maintenance, power generation and telecommunications sectors.
He holds a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wollongong and is a Member of the Institute of Company Directors.
Jacob was appointed to the role of Head of Downer Defence in June 2021 following the consolidation of the Group’s Professional Services, Base and Estate Management, and Estate Development and Base Upgrade offerings.
Jacob joined Downer in 2003 and previously held roles as Executive General Manager of Spotless Defence, Executive General Manager Power and Gas and Executive General Manager New Zealand and Pacific.
He has 25 years’ experience in operational and senior management roles across the facilities management, defence, electricity and gas distribution sectors.
Jacob has significant experience in mergers and acquisitions, strategic planning, major contract re-bids, complex commercial negotiation and dispute resolution and has led several Zero Harm transformations.
Jacob holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Queensland and initially qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Deloitte.
James was appointed to the role of Head of Utilities in April 2022.
He was previously Executive General Manager for Downer in New Zealand where he was responsible for establishing the Utilities business as part of Downer’s move to sector based businesses. James also led the integration of the New Zealand Spotless business, forming Facilities Services and Utilities.
James has over 35 years’ professional experience, encompassing the facilities management, power, telecommunications, water and gas sectors.
Prior to joining Downer, James held a number of operational and senior management positions in Tier 1 companies across Australia and New Zealand, including Tenix, Transfield Services, Western Power and Optus.
He holds a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration.
